Published on: 14th March 2025

Nikki Sayer has been awarded the prestigious Freedom of the City of London and has officially joined the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights, marking a significant milestone in her distinguished career.

Nikki, Managing Director at Casper Customs, has over three decades of experience in the shipping and customs industry. Her expertise has played a vital role in supporting international trade, customs operations, and the wider maritime community. Her latest honours recognise both her professional contributions and her dedication to fostering skills development and diversity within the sector.

The Freedom of the City of London is one of the oldest surviving traditional ceremonies in the UK, dating back to the 13th century. It is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service in their respective fields, upholding the values of leadership, integrity, and commitment to the City. Nikki joins a distinguished group of recipients, including King Charles III, global leaders like Nelson Mandela and Margaret Thatcher—the last UK Prime Minister to receive the honour—as well as celebrities such as Stephen Fry, Ed Sheeran, and Dame Judi Dench.

In addition, Nikki has joined the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights, one of the historic Livery Companies of the City of London, which continues to play an important role in supporting the maritime industry. As a member, she will contribute to the Company’s mission of supporting maritime education and encouraging the next generation of industry professionals and joins fellow member Michael Shakesheff, Casper Group Managing Director.

Commenting on the recognition, Nikki said:

“I am deeply honoured to receive the Freedom of the City of London and to become part of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights. These honours reflect not just my own journey, but also the dedication of my colleagues and the incredible maritime community. I look forward to continuing my work in promoting skills development and supporting the industry’s future leaders.”

Nikki has been a strong advocate for industry skills development founded the North East School of Shipping and is a Commissioner of the Maritime Skills Commission, which focuses on building a sustainable and highly skilled workforce for the UK’s maritime sector.
